DIRECTIONS TO PLAYA SAN MIGUEL

Playa San Miguel, Costa Rica, is a hamlet halfway down the Nicoya Peninsula (Pacific Ocean), 15 kilometers south of Punta Islita and 10 kilometers north of Playa Coyote. Relatively unknown, it doesn’t appear on most maps.

If you fly into Liberia, San Miguel is 120 kilometers (75 miles) south of the Airport, a 2½-hour trip. You drive the first 90 kilometers (55 miles) on a paved road to Carmona or Jicaral (about 1½ hours). Then you drive toward the coast 32 kilometers (20 miles) on a well-maintained compacted dirt road to San Miguel (about 1 hour). The speed limit (60-80 kilometers per hour) on the paved road is strictly enforced. Best to slow down and enjoy the trip.

If you fly into San Jose, the drive to San Miguel takes about 4 hours. You can cross from the mainland to the Nicoya Peninsula over the Puente de La Amistad Bridge, or you can take the Ferry from Punta Arenas to Playa Naranjo. Check the ferry schedule.

You can also fly from San Jose to Punta Islita with Sansa, and then rent a car locally (car rentals at Samara or Punta Islita).
